at the convergence of 50 research reports that talked about the dangers of cell phone use in testinand texting devicee driving. there was so little understanding about this. we had a massive debate. we knew this was very danger is behavior based on the research. we come from at traffic safety perspective, and we know the way to change this behavior follows the formula you heard ray lahood talk about. how you do that in the framework of very little conversation was the difficult part. a year ago on january we call for a nationwide ban on told a news and text to use while driving, and we called for companies to put in place policies prohibit the use of this. it was such a long debate press because of the lack of conversation. then i look at today and what we heard from secretary lahood and others. but that the amount of activity we have heard from a state legislative point of view, a research point of view, law enforcement point of view. i encourage you as we listen to our panelists today to think about how we maintain the momentum. i think all of us know that a year of action, even a tremendou

. our susan candiotti joins us with the latest on the investigation. >> and of course the question is, why an attack on this 34-year-old diplomat who had been in the country for about eight years now working at the nicaraguan mission. cesar mercado. and police found not one but two knives. and they weren't found next to his body. they were found in the bathroom of the small studio apartment where the diplomat lived. cesar mercado, apparently one of the knives were a steak knife according to new york police commissioner paul brown. and he says it was found near the bathroom sink and the sink was filled with blood, unfortunately. and the second knife was a smaller paring knife and that was found inside the sink. so why the positioning of the knives? so many questions to be answered here. his body was found just inside the front door. and when the driver came, the door was unlocked. he opened it up, looked inside, saw the body, and immediately called the police. so they have a lot to try to figure out. his throat, indeed, was cut. and they also said that he was stabbed in the stomach. so

the u.s. has blundrd into the scenario with one overreaction or another. bin laden needs to be the object of our hoss tilts, national security and contempt and deserves to be taken seriously. but most of what he has achieved we do ourselves. bin laden does not deserve that we even inadvertently fuffleful unimagined dreams. here's more from the president friday at this news conference. i think in this day and age there is always going to be the potential for an individual or a small group of individuals, if they are willing to die, to kill other people. some of them are going to be very well organized and some of them are going to be random. that threat is there and it's important, i think, for the american people to understand that and not to live in fear. it's just a reality of today's world that there are going to be threats out there. we have i think greatly improved our homeland security security since 9/11 occurred. you know, i am constantly impressed with the dedication that our teams apply to this problem. they are chasing down every threat, not just from al qaeda

that in their position right now that was used during the shooting, but they are still on the lookout for a 2001 is white buick with d.c. tags. they want anybody in the community to come forward if they saw that vehicle around 13th and u. street or in the 1100 block of gerard street. they're telling us they believe this stems from an argument that happened outside of the funeral yesterday at about 1:00. the chief said they believe there are gang members involved with this. at this point they don't know if the argument stemmed from the funeral as they were mourning young ashley mckay here yesterday afternoon. so at thisit appears as though they are still looking for an additional suspect, possibly two more in this case. they said it was the community that came forward and helped them find this 21-year-old brandon miller that they arrested last night. they still want people to be on the lookout for the 2001 buick from d.c. tags and we'll have the latest on the story as it continues to develop. let's listen real quick to what the police chief and mayor fenty had to say moments ago. >> what happened here on

're on our twittergate. pat is joining us on the republican line from maryland. caller: i did not understand the agency that the recession was over. host: it is a group of economists. they said the recession ended in june of 2009. caller: obviously, they are not traveling around the country. if you will take a look at what is happening -- i go to hoses every day of people. in an insurance agent. i speak with people lost their jobs and their wives have lost their jobs as well. their children are dropping out of school. making $9 an hour to support their families. mr. obama is way off when it comes to understanding what's going on in the country. what is going on is more jobs are being lost. we just lost 12 of hundred more jobs at the steel plant in this city. 700 more jobs at the company that brings the food in for the two stadiums in baltimore city. another company just went bust. that was 1500 jobs. this is every single week for a new place is closing. you cannot tell me there is the recession over. the recession is going to last. i think it's gone to last another two years or three years.

, savannah. this was the worst helicopter crash in about four years for u.s. troops. nine troops dead. this happened in zabul province, which is in the south-southeastern section of afghanistan. an area where the taliban controls much of the territory and where coalition forces have been stepping up their attempts to push the taliban out. we are told this crash happened about 4:00 this morning, local time. the military says that there were no reports of enemy fire. that the crash is still under investigation. now, despite the fact that there were no reports of enemy fire, the taliban has called news organizations, including a call here at nbc news in kabul, to claim responsibility for the attack. they say they shot the helicopter down. the taliban often does that, claims responsibility for things that turn out to be accidents. and indeed, most of the helicopter crashes here have turned out to be accidents. maintenance problems, the incredible amount of dust in the air. this is the deadliest year for coalition forces. after today's crash, 525 coalition forces have died this year. 351 o

obama's pointman on u.s. education secretary arne duncan. yesterday he said he was a big fan of rhee and thought her leadership was still needed as chancellor of dc's public schools. he's also said he has reached out to both prix and gray to see if he could help to strike a deal between the two. that's kind of what's been going on the past few days. duncan has said he may be speaking with one or bowe of them before -- both of them before the meeting and gray is getting pressure on the other side. it was the dc teachers union who really wanted -- they were big supporters of gray and they want him to fire rhee because she of course fired 266 teachers lassock due to budget reasons. he is getting hit on both sides on this one. >>> today, six months after it was passed by congress, some of the first parts of the health care reform package goes in to affect. -- speaking yesterday in falls church, virginia, president obama said these measures will make health care more affordable. >> you have some basic measures of protection in interacting with the health care system, which means you are n

out and instead stay on the job. one person tells us she plans to work until she dies. i'll tell what you, this isn't a new phenomenon. take a look at these numbers here. in 1998, 12% of workers over 65 stayed on the job by choice. in 2008, 17% of older workers delayed retirement. now we're at 18%. so we're seeing this number inch up. by 2018, it's forecast that 22% of workers are going to delay their requirement. now not everyone is staying at their current job. some choose to take on new projects. others start a business. one person tells us when he retired he started a small ebay business. then again some other people just decide to change careers. they got the confidence to do that. one mother who retired from the public school system is now a college professor and education consultant. some people have options, t.j., because at this age they're at the height of their careers and not really ready to pack it in and start golfing, gardening and bird watching. they want to reach to new heights in their careers. >> you give some of the reasons there they might want to keep working. ho

and recent college graduates. it got us thinking about the promises the president made as he came into office. of course, when he first got into office, very beginning no approval rating until we took one about february of 2009. it showed 76% of americans approved of the job he was doing. and then in february of -- now i should say it is 50% down. some 20 points. down some 20 points. look at this brand new poll of polls. not our poll. this shows that it's down 46%. down to 46%. the president's approval rating. that's not even our poll. take a look at this, though. this is all despite some legislative victories that the president had. health care reform. remember that? although very controversial, financial regulatory overhaul. the stimulus. plus, two supreme court justice confirmations. talking about sonia socieewonia and what is the problem, then? of course, it's the economy and unemployment, as the president heard yesterday. when he got into office, a poll taken around february of 2009. he was at 8.2%. now 9.6% and some think it's going up to 10% unprecedented, very tough for the president
